Round up of an amazing 2018 in the CQ

December 21st 2018

This year has been a very busy and hopefully successful year for all the businesses in the Creative Quarter. Awards have been won, new businesses have started and so much more besides. Here's our round-up of 2018.

It's been a great place to live

Sneinton Market Avenues kicked things off with the very well attended 'Light Night on The Avenues'. With everything from live music to fair ground rides, a luminous parade and fire dancers it really lit things up down there. It was also a very hot Summer in the Avenues, not only because of the weather but with the number of events that were hosted here. The Red Square; Art of Football Festival had football fans filling the avenues with cheers as England made it to the semi-finals in this year's world cup. The Craft Beer Festival kept attendees cool in the heatwave. People came from all over to try different craft beers and ales from some of the country's best brewerys. The Avenues also had a successful run of the 'Friday Nights @ Sneinton Market events, with live music and lots of street food.

The Avenues got a complete artistic make-over this year by many talented artists that was a part of the Street Art Festival. Street artists turned Sneinton Market into one giant outdoor art exhibition that showcased their skill and technique. 19 Van and Heiliche brought Chinese culture to Sneinton Market with their beautiful artwork. Montana's community of artists has been at the centre of all this as they've spread their amazing artwork around the area bringing us bursts of colour and eye pleasing imagery.

Nottingham Businesses have come together to help fight a great causes

The wonderful businesses of Nottingham helped in every way they could to raise money for the Framework Homeless Charity. Beat The Streets, a dhpfamily festival raised a massive £100,000! Adtrak took part in 'The Sleep Out' this year to help raise money for the charity and will be supporting Framework throughout 2019. Synthetic Pro Audio got in on the action too setting up their fundraiser 'The Big Spin' where local DJ's took it in turns to spin the decks for 24 hours straight. Hallam Internet's first ever Digital Summit raised £15,000 for Framework. And right here in the CQ Emmanuel House has been doing a fantastic job with all they do to support the homeless, particularly providing clean clothes, home cooked meals and advice.

Beat the Streets will be back for 2019 on Sunday January 27th. Get your tickets by clicking here ..

Nottingham held it's 3rd Poetry Festival this year with a stellar line-up that included acclaimed performers Roger McGough and Jackie Kay.

Off Centre Festival, Nottingham's first independent photography festival; filled loads of venues with beautiful photography submitted by local photographers. Some of their workshops were held in the City Arts Dome that made Sneinton Market Avenues its home for a few weeks in November. There were many great events and activities there that everyone could get involved in and enjoy during the NOfest Pop-Up Festival.

Hockley Hustle raised a lot of money this year for many great charities. Over 300 acts performed across 35 venues. Over the years they've raised a whopping £130,000 since starting out. Sneinton Market hosted Young Hustlers this year so the little ones could get in on the fun.

Notts Pride took Hockley by storm and after every storm come the rainbows. Hundreds of folk partied with and celebrated the LGBTQ community. Glitter and sparkles filled the air as Drag Queens took to the stage and gave a brilliant performance.

It's been a great place to learn

What a busy year it's been for Nottingham Trent University and Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies. With the creation of the new world-leading centre, Metronome, students, lecturers and researchers will work alongside designers, artists, employers and creative companies to learn, teach, develop and apply creative technologies and design. This brings more creativity to the educational scene in Nottingham. Confetti also opened its Media Hub to deliver more courses at both FE and HE level.

Nottingham Collage re-branded itself and gave itself a whole new identity as work started on its amazing new building on Canal Street.

This city is full of many talented young creatives. The Young Creative Awards was proof of that this year as it celebrated it's 10th anniversary!

It was an exciting time for the Creative Quarter Company as Susan Hallam MBE and founder of Hallam Internet was announced at the new Chair of the CQ board. She joins the board as the company builds on its success supporting creative and digital start-ups to support more established SMEs and more digital and technology-based businesses - particularly those with potential for significant jobs growth - spreading our impact all the way from the studios of artists and designer-makers to the frontiers of fin-tech and the life-sciences.

The Independent business scene was thriving this year in the Nottingham Independents Festival. There were winners in the competition’s seven different categories which were chosen by the judging panel from amongst the finalists in each category. Everyone was spoilt for choice when it came to voting for their favourite independent.

Small Business Saturday UK encouraged Christmas shoppers to shop local and support their local independent businesses.

It's been a great place to Invest

The people that live and work in the Creative Quarter had a big influence this year on the plans to transform the 40-acre scrub land behind BioCity and the BBC building, known as the former Boots Island site. Architects, local residents, Sneinton market tenants, local business owners and festival organisers were amongst those who fed back on plans to create a brand new mixed-use scheme which will expand the Creative Quarter.

Development and growth hasn't stopped in Sneinton Market as Avenues D & E will be completely revamped and brought back to life with work starting soon. You'll see new shops, places to eat and student accommodation. This will be beneficial to the area, for those that live locally and visitors.

More homes will soon be coming to Fruit Market at Sneinton Market too. Phase 1 is now fully booked and it’s exciting to see how the scheme is developing with home buyers working closely with Letts Wheeler Architects to create a contemporary scheme that complements the historic buildings in this conservation area. You can read more about the development here.

We'd like to thank everyone who has been been involved for the hard work they've put in to making the Creative Quarter an ever better place to live, learn, work and invest.

We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a very happy and successful 2019.
